A
In 1996, three men in California were taken to a hospital with strange symptoms (症状). They felt dizzy, tired, and weak. They couldn’t speak, and they had trouble breathing. The hospital doctors thought the men had been poisoned, but couldn’t work out what was wrong with them. Then they found out the three men were all chefs, and they had just shared a dish of fugu.
Fugu, the Japanese name for the puffer fish, is one of the strangest fish in the ocean. The puffer fish gets its name from the way the fish protects itself from enemies. Whenever it is attacked, the fish blows up its body to over twice its normal size!
The reason the three men were taken to the hospital is because the puffer fish is very poisonous. As a rule, if you eat a whole puffer fish, you will probably die. The three men had a close call, but they all survived.

The reason the three men were taken to the hospital is because the puffer fish is very poisonous. As a rule, if you eat a whole puffer fish, you will probably die. The three men had a close call, but they all survived.
The symptoms of fugu poisoning are a strange feeling around the mouth and throat, and difficulty breathing. You can’t breathe and your body can’t get any air. Your brain still works perfectly, however, so you know you are dying, but you can’t speak or do anything about it.
Despite the danger of fugu poisoning, this strange, ugly, and very poisonous fish is actually a very expensive, and very popular, kind of food in Japan. Customers pay up to $200 per person to eat a fugu meal. Because of the danger, fugu can only be prepared by chefs with a special licence from the government. These chefs are trained to identify and remove the poisonous parts of the fish. Most people who die from eating fugu these days are people who have tried their hand at preparing the fish themselves.
Fugu is said to be so delicious that it has even started to be imported(进口) into Hong Kong and the United States. Several tons of fugu are now exported from Japan every year.

A tsunami(海啸) is a giant wave that can do huge amounts of damage when it hits land. To see how one starts, throw a stone into a pond or lake, and watch the ripples(涟漪) spread out on the surface of the water. A tsunami starts in a similar way to one of these ripples, except that it is not caused by a stone, but by something much bigger, such as an earthquake occurring under the sea.
Once it has started, a tsunami can move across the ocean for huge distances. An earthquake off the coast of South America generated (引起) a tsunami that travelled west for over 15,000 kilometers and caused enormous damage when it hit the coast of Japan 22 hours later.
Tsunamis can be caused by volcanic eruptions as well as by earthquakes. The most deadly tsunami in recorded history was the one that followed the eruption of Indonesia’s Krakatoa volcano in 1883. About 36,000 people died, and what actually killed most of them was the tsunami rather than the eruption itself.
It is not only events on Earth that cause tsunamis. They can also be generated by a comet (彗星) or meteor (流星) hitting the Earth. No one has actually seen this happen, except on screen in Hollywood films such as Deep Impact. But the giant tsunamis produced by special effects in such films, big enough to cover the skyscrapers of New York, are theoretically possible, and computer simulations (模拟研究) show that they have almost certainly happened in the distant past.
In the open ocean, a tsunami wave is difficult to see, because most of it is below the surface. The part of the wave that is actually visible may be just one or two meters high. But the wave has enormous power, and can travel at the speed of a jet plane — almost 800 kph. As it eventually approaches land, the wave slows down, and this causes a dramatic increase in its height. By the time it actually reaches the land, it can be up to 30 meters high.
Tsunamis occur in all the major oceans of the world, although they are most common in the Pacific area around Japan. Here, there is a complex and detailed system for moni-toring the waves and providing warning for those who live in the area. This is a vital service because anyone who thinks that tsunamis are just big surfing waves should think again — they are impressive, dramatic, destructive and deadly!
31. The main idea of Paragraph 1 is ________.
32. Which tsunami was the most deadly one in recorded history according to the passage?
33. What three things can cause a tsunami?
34. Why is a tsunami difficult to see in the open ocean?
35. Tsunamis are most common ________.
D
There is a saying in France that states: “The government could fall, the Louvre could be broken into, or aliens (外星人) could land on Earth, but if any of these things happened during the Tour de France, no one would notice.” The Tour de France is the most famous cycling race in the world. The race, which is held in July every year, consists of twenty one-day stages, plus several rest days. The course follows a clockwise route around France, and often neighboring countries, including Luxembourg, Belgium, and Italy. The winner is the rider who completes all twenty stages of the race in the shortest overall time. |
|
The Tour de France first started on July 1, 1903, when sixty cyclists left from in front of The Alarm Clock Café, just outside of Paris, and rode 467 kilometers to Lyon. The first race consisted of six legs, each of which was about 400 kilometers long. At that time there were no rest days—the winner was the rider who finished the race in the shortest total time. The winner of the first Tour de France, Maurice Garin, the most popular cyclist in France at that time, received 2,000 francs (about $350). It took him 94 hours and 33 minutes to ride all 2,428 kilometers of the race, three hours faster than the runner-up. Over the weeks during which the race was run, the idea of the Tour de France slowly caught on with the people of France. The race has been held every year since that time, except during the years of World Wars I and II.
The Tour de France has developed several special honours for which racers compete. Henri Desgranges, the founder of the race, introduced the yellow jersey(运动衫), the highest honour, in 1919 to show the leading racer each day of the Tour de France. Each day, the officials who keep track of all of the riders’ times compare each rider’s total time up to that point. The racer with the lowest overall time wears the yellow jersey during the following day’s race. Other honours include the green jersey, which is given to the best sprinter, and the polka dot jersey, a white jersey with red dots, for the best rider in the mountains along the route.
36. The passage is mainly about ________.
37. What does the underlined word “legs” mean?
38. Henri Desgranges was ________.
39. Today, the Tour de France is different from the original race because cyclists ________.
40. Who wears the polka dot jersey?
1. Be knowledgeable.
2. Be loud.
3. Be slow.
4. Be articulate.
5. Be confident and relaxed.
6. Be humorous.
7. Be passionate and aggressive.
8. Be direct.
9. Be well prepared.
10. Be good at acting.
School Life
Going to a British school for one year was a very enjoyable experience for me. I was very happy with the school hours in British because school starts
Healthy lifestyle
Teenage girls need about 2200 calories a day. Boys need a bit more. 50% of your calories should come from rice, bread, vegetables and fruit. You also need a lot of water, 6 to 8 glasses a day. Water helps keep your system clean. Drinking enough water will improve your skin and give you healthy hair. A good amount of sleep every night is also important for your health. When you sleep, your body prepares you for the day to come. Teenagers need 8 to 10 hours of sleep each night. As a matter of fact, loss of sleep can make you look tired, and even cause you to put on weight.
Save the Environment
We have to save our environment for our future generations. Many people think that pollution cannot be stopped if we want the economy to continue developing.
However, many things can be done. For example, people should be encouraged to buy recycled products, which are much friendlier to the environment. It means we do not need to cut down more trees and cause the destruction of more forests. Our industry will still grow, but the earth will not have to suffer.
We also have the population problem. As the number of people in the world keeps growing, we are producing more rubbish. For our future generations, we must all work together to keep our earth clean and healthy.
Education
Education is very important. Firstly, it educates people and helps them better understand the world. Secondly, it lets people know more about the history and culture of their own country. Thirdly, education also helps develop people’s personalities.
Through education, young people learn to respect and tolerate others. They will become more friendly, cooperative and helpful. Through education, young people academic knowledge and learn the skills they need for their future careers. Through education, young people gain experience and learn practical skills in different fields of science.
In short, education prepares young people acquire for the future, helps create a more peaceful and wealthy society and benefits the development of the country.
Music
Music is our friend. We can hear it on the radio, and on our MP3s. We can also see music videos on TV. When we feel lonely, music can drive away our loneliness. When we are tired, music can get rid of tiredness. Music can even make us forget our sickness when we are actually sick. That’s why many of us invest in CDs or tapes that we enjoy and that relaxes us. There are all kinds of music. Most young people probably enjoy pop music best, and they might have their own favorite songs, pop stars and bands. But for older people, classical music might be their first choice.
The World Online
The internet has brought about great effects on our lives. The first is its value for people who are looking for information. When people are in need of information, the Internet is now the first choice that many people turn to. The second is the possibility to build groups online and form friendships based on common interests, rather than appearance age or popularity.
However, there are some negative effects as well. The main drawbacks are uncontrolled information and unhealthy changes in the way people spend their time.
With all the negative effects, the Internet is still a positive tool that helps make our lives better, so long as we learn how to handle the problems it cause.
Advertisements are an important part of our lives. They are usually informative, attractive and persuasive so as to encourage people to buy a product or service or believe an idea.
There are two main types of advertisements—commercial advertisements and public service advertisement. A commercial advertisement is one that someone has paid for to promote a product or service. Public service advertisements are intended to educate people about health, safety and any other issue which affects social welfare. They are meant to teach us and help us live better lives.
Be smart about advertisements and let advertisements be at your service: think about why you should do the things the advertisements suggest, or buy the product or the service the advertisements promote.
World Languages
Languages do not understand each other. If everyone in the world spoke the same language, the world would be quite different.
First, if everyone spoke the same language, it would be very easy for different nations to communicate and understand each other. We would need no translation or interpretation at international conferences, so a lot of money would be saved.
Second, if everyone spoke the same language, people would live in harmony with each other. People who speak different languages often believe in different religions and this often causes misunderstandings and even wars.
Third, everybody speaking the same language would improve cultural and economic exchanges between nations. Presently, the difference in language makes cross-cultural communication and international trade difficult. So if everyone spoke the same language, communication and trade between nations could be done more easily.
Nature
We compare nature to the mother of mankind, because we get almost everything from her. We cannot live without natural food such as rice and corn. We would freeze to death without clothes made from wool and other nature materials. We would have to live in the open without houses built out of stone and wood. For this reason alone, we should protect nature as we did to our mothers. Unfortunately some people, for immediate and local interests, are greedily extorting things from nature as if nature is an inexhaustible treasure. In fact, nature irresponsible deeds are bound to be punished by nature.

The City Mouse and the Country Mouse
Once there were two mice. They were friends. One mouse lived in the country; the other mouse lived in the city. After many years the Country mouse saw the City mouse; he said, Do come and see me at my house in the country. So the City mouse went. The City mouse said, This food is not good, and your house is not good. Why do you live in a hole in the field? You should come and live in the city. You would live in a nice house made of stone. You would have nice food to eat. You must come and see me at my house in the city.
The Country mouse went to the house of the City mouse. It was a very good house. Nice food was set ready for them to eat. But just as they began to eat they heard a great noise. The City mouse cried, Run! Run! The cat is coming! They ran away quickly and hid.
After some time they came out. When they came out, the Country mouse said, I do not like living in the city. I like living in my hole in the field. For it is nicer to be poor and happy, than to be rich and afraid.

You need two things to learn English well---passion and effective learning methods. And passion is the more important one. why?Because passion makes you want to learn English; the learning methods only tell you how to do it faster.
If you love learning English:
You will do it regularly and spend more time on it.
Learning English will be easier for you. It will be easy for you to remember new words and grammar structures. It’s because the brain easily remembers information on a subject that you like.
We know you may not love learning English. And even if you love it, you will sometimes not want to do it. This is how human psychology (心理) works——sometimes we are so lazy, bored, and tired that we don’t want to do even the things that we like.
Here is what you can do when you don’t feel like learning English:
Imagine yourself in the future
Imagine you can talk to native speakers just like you talk in your first language. Imagine other people wanting to speak English as well as you do. Imagine the possibility of writing e-mail to people from all over the world.
You should know that it is possible to learn English really well. Just look at other people who have done it.
Remember that you are already good
You already know some English. That’s a big success! Now it’s time for more successes. Time to start using powerful methods of effective learning. Time to gain an impressive knowledge of English.
Remember there is a lot that you don’t know.
You are good, but your English probably isn’t perfect. You probably can’t understand English-language TV, read books in English, talk to native speakers easily, write letters without mistakes, etc.
You should never think your English is perfect. Even if you are the best student in your class, always try to find your weak areas and work on them. When you’ve learned to speak English well, your problems will be quite small. Right now, your problems are probably more basic: mistakes in pronunciation, small vocabulary, grammar problems with the present perfect tense and conditional structures.
Use your English whenever you can
This is very, very important. The more you use English, the more you will want to learn it.
Because English is so popular, you can use it everywhere. You can use google to find English-language websites with interesting information, you can watch American cartoons, you can play adventure games on your computer, you can read interesting books in English, or you can do other things that we write about.
If you do these things, you will not only have fun and learn English. If you see that a new English word lets you understand your favorite TV show, you will want to learn more words. So you will learn English more, use it more, learn it more, use it more… if you also use effective learning methods, your English will grow faster than you can imagine.
Talk to people about English
This is a very simple method, but it is very effective. Here’s how it works:
You usually talk about things which interest you. But the opposite is true, too. If you start talking about a boring subject, you will begin to get interested in it.
Imagine you are studying a subject that you hate. You are bored and tired, but you have to pass the test tomorrow. If there are people near you, you have two options(选择):You can tell everybody how much you are suffering or you can tell those people about the things you’ve learned. If you choose the first option, you will only feel worse.
If you choose the second option, and start a conversation on the boring subject, you will begin to look at it in a totally different way. Suddenly it will become a subject worth talking about——therefore, an interesting subject.
How can you begin such a conversation? If you are studying English, you can surprise another person by talking to him/her in English. Say (in English): Hi, I’m studying English and I hate it. Or you can say (in your first language): Hey, I’ve learned 50 English words today. Do you know what’s the English word for“犀利哥”? If there are no people near you, you can telephone or send an e-mail message to your friend.
What will your friends say? Probably they won’t be very interested, but it doesn’t matter! The important thing is: after talking about English, you will study it with much more passion. Try it.
Find a friend who is learning English
If you can find a friend who is learning English and is on a similar level of skill, you will be in an excellent situation:
You will have someone to talk about English with. These conversations will increase your interest in English, as explained in the previous(之前的) section.
Learning English will be easier, because you will be able to discuss your problem with your friend.
You will study English more, because you will want to be better than your friend. You should meet your friend regularly. Ideally, he/she should live near you, or go to the same school as you.
Remember that learning English requires action
We have said this many times. One small action is more powerful than reading hundreds of articles. Yes, we know it is very hard to do things, even if they are good for us. We humans are lazy creatures. That’s why not many people speak English well.
Still, we hope you can do the things we talk about in your English learning method——not only read about them. You will be successful only if you change something about your life.
Don’t put it off. Begin now!
